CUNY NYC Language Mapping Project

Portfolio Image

This was a year-long project conducted for the Futures Initiative in academic year 2015-2016 that looked at the language course offerings offered throughout the City University of New York (CUNY) system as well as at the language spoken by the student population at each campus and the languages spoken by the communities closest to each of the campuses in the CUNY system.

The project aimed to identify opportunities for future language course offerings to better serve the needs of communities located close to each college.

The GIS spatial analysis was done in QGIS using languages spoken at home data from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey. The interactive web-mapping interface for the project was built using CartoDB. Graphics were designed in Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Illustrator.
